Recognition and RPL
TAFE NSW recognises the skills and knowledge you have gained through previous studies, work and life experiences.
If you have formal qualifications from a TAFE, university, school or a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Australia, containing content that is included in the qualification you want to study, you can apply for recognition. If you hold qualifications gained overseas, TAFE NSW will carefully consider them during the recognition process.
If you have been working in an occupation that is relevant to a qualification you are seeking you have probably developed skills and knowledge which can be assessed for recognition. You may also have developed valuable skills by working for a community or voluntary organisation or through other life experiences such as hobbies, sport and leisure activities, which can also be considered for recognition.
How much recognition?
Based on the skills and knowledge that you have gained through all of these means you can apply for up to and including 100% of a qualification or a course.
Benefits of recognition
You will benefit from the process because:
- you might spend less time studying
- it might cost less to gain qualifications
- you will not relearn what you already know
The next step
You will need to find out about the course you want to study and approach your teacher to discuss the recognition process. The teacher will give you details of the units of competence and further information to assist you to make a decision about proceeding with your application.
The teacher you need to contact is listed under your course in the Course Information section of the Institute’s website. Alternatively you can contact 1300 TAFE Western (1300 823 393) or your local campus to be referred to the appropriate teacher.
What does it cost to apply?
If you are currently enrolled in a TAFE NSW course there is no charge to apply for recognition in that course.
