Early completion of a traineeship

Did you know that NSW trainees can.....

  • Get credit for previous work experience or study?
  • Complete their traineeship term ahead of time?

The benefits of early completion are many:

  • you will have a qualified employee sooner
  • your trainee can take on more responsibility at work (be promoted/supervise others)
  • you will get your Commonwealth incentive payment earlier
  • you will have flexibility to suit your skills needs and improved performance to boost your bottom line!!!

When to ask for an early completion

You and your trainee can seek a reduction in the term of the traineeship either at the beginning of or during the traineeship.

Why can we ask for an early completion?

You and your trainee can ask for an early completion, if your trainee has:

  • previous relevant experience or
  • undertaken related training previously such as a pre-vocational course or
  • demonstrated relevant training overseas

Early completion of the traineeship may be requested if:

  • your trainee has completed their formal qualification/training through the registered training organisation nominated in the training contract and
  • you are able to confirm that your trainee has demonstrated the required competencies.

For your convenience, guidelines and request forms can be accessed by clicking on the link below.

Where to submit your request for early completion

Please submit your request to the local NSW DET State Training Centre. State Training Centre officers will process your request and advise you of the outcome.

Your nominated ACC (Australian Apprenticeships Centre) representative can assist you to prepare and lodge the request.

If you think your trainee may be eligible for credit or recognition, contact your Australian Apprenticeships Centre.

Guidelines for Early Completion

Requests for early completion of a training contract may be approved by the Commissioner for Vocational Training when:

  • the written request is received by your local DET State Training Centre (see details below) prior to the nominal completion date and
  • your trainee has successfully completed the appropriate qualification through the registered training organisation (RTO) and
  • you consider your trainee has achieved a level of competence at the required industry standard and
  • the request is supported by both you and your trainee

Note: If the request for early completion is not supported by both you and your trainee, the matter may be referred by the Commissioner to the Vocational Training Tribunal for determination.
