Tips for success when studying by distance or online learning

30-January-12

Distance or online learning  has many advantages for students , particularly those who may live in more remote communities including being able to fit study around work, family and life commitments as well as not having to spend time travelling to and from classes.

Sally Brownlow, Manager Learning and Innovation at TAFE Western said “Distance or online learning is a great way to gain a qualification when and where it suits you.  Students who study in this way are self starters who are committed to learning a new skill and disciplined in their approach to studying.  My top tips for any student considering distance or online learning are:

  • Talk to the Head Teacher and / or Counsellor before starting a course so that you understand the course requirements and make sure the course is the right one for you
  • Manage your time and set realistic study goals – if you work full time and have children you should be realistic in how much time you will be able to dedicate to your studies
  • Get a routine – If you put off your study it can be hard to catch up later on
  • Make use of the support networks we provide and don’t be afraid to ask for help particularly if you are unfamiliar with the technology - students who use the support of teachers or online tutoring are more likely to continue with their studies
  • Get to know the other students studying your course – use the forums and chat tools to share experiences with your peers and build a support network
  • Reward yourself – studying at a distance requires discipline and hard work and you should be proud of what you have achieved

Enrolments for all courses are now open until classes commence 6 February.  For further information on more than 500 courses currently being offered by TAFE Western visit www.wit.tafensw.edu.au, drop into your nearest campus or call 131 601.
