Earthworks in the Outback
The Earthworks team at TAFE Western have been delivering courses to rural and remote regions of NSW for many years. We are keen to ensure that all people have access to our training and assessment services. A key project for the earthworks team has been delivering comprehensive training to the Tibooburra region.
Case Study
Tibooburra
Tibooburra is a small township in the far north-west corner of NSW. The township was established when gold was discovered in the 1880's. It has a population of 161 people, two pubs (circa 1860), one policeman, two schools including School of the Air and one hospital to service the Royal Flying Doctor Service. It is 1,187km away from Sydney and 335km away from Broken Hill. Tourism is a staple of the Tibooburra economy and people travel from far and wide to visit the remote township.
Our students come from many different walks of life. On our last visit to Tibooburra in October 2010, we had students from the Wild Dog Destruction Board, station managers and their staff, professional kangaroo harvesters and local townspeople and contractors. We provided training on seven different types of load shifting equipment, with five being WorkCover accredited. Other courses are available on demand.
