Aboriginal Programs
We work with the Aboriginal community to develop courses with appropriate cultural and vocational outcomes.
We celebrate the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and encourage all TAFE NSW staff and students to learn about the history, culture and contemporary issues of Aboriginal Australia.
A feature of the Institute's involvement in Aboriginal education is the Yarradumurra Centre for Aboriginal Performing and Visual Arts. It attracts students from the central and western regions of NSW, has contributed to increased cultural awareness and produced some outstanding outcomes for its students.
The Western Institute has an Aboriginal Development Manager and all colleges are served by Aboriginal Coordinators and Aboriginal Student Support Officers. They can provide you with advice on courses and careers, applying for ABSTUDY and will support you while you are doing your course.
Karen James from Parkes has been named as the Aboriginal Student of the Year at the Western Institute's 2008 Outstanding Graduating Student Awards.
