Incentives for Higher Technical Skills

Diploma of Nursing ( Enrolled/Division 2 Nursing)

Incentives for Higher Technical Skills

The project is supported by the Australian Government Department of Industry, Innovation, Science, Research and Tertiary Education.

This project will enhance the capacity of rural and remote Western NSW and Western NSW Local Health District to attract and retain staff and grow their own workforce from Certificate III level through to Diploma of Enrolled Nursing. Rural and remote students will be able to work in their local environment and supported by their employer.

Facilities of the Western NSW Local Health District from across the Western NSW will co-ordinate work placements for their employees for the skills development required in the Diploma of Nursing program. These skills will include Holistic assessment of nurse/ client interaction, Oral administration of medication, IMI or SCI administration of medication. Other skills undertaken in work placement are Basic Nursing care, Acute care and Perioperative nursing, additional electives are available including Aboriginal Medical Service and Mental Health nursing. This will be a total of 600 hours in the workplace as a student enrolled nurse. The work placement hours are mandated by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

The pilot program will provide the opportunity for students to be eligible for some assistance with travel, accommodation and textbook costs normally met by the student. Students through their employment with GWAHS will be able to work a minimum of 15 hours a week while not in TAFE blocks or on work placement, giving them financial security throughout their training. Whenever possible work placements will be conducted as close as possible to the student’s home community reducing training barriers normally experienced by rural and remote students, wanting to become Enrolled Nurses.
