General Education and Work Skills

Karla MorganAccess and General Education provides special programs to help people progress towards further study and employment. The programs are tailored for those who need further study to progress their careers and those who want to enter or re-enter work or study.

These programs provide career and employment opportunities to many people who have previously faced barriers or disadvantage. Courses are available for people who wish to:

  • gain a Year 12 qualification to enter higher education or the police or defence forces
  • improve their written and oral communication skills to achieve a work promotion
  • improve their English language skills
  • enhance their employability skills including literacy, numeracy or maths
  • enrol in a vocational course but lack the confidence or skills
  • learn a foreign language or enhance their inter-cultural skills
  • achieve a qualification to work as an interpreter or in education support or in the communication and media industry
  • access disability support to complete a vocational course

Alison Cutmore from Cowra has been named as the Pre-vocational and Foundation Studies category winner in the Western Institute's 2008 Outstanding Graduating Student Awards.

Satellite delivery wins recognition for TAFE (17 Nov 08)
The NSW Premier presented TAFE NSW - Western Institute with a Premier's Public Sector Award which recognises how the Institute uses satellite technology to deliver training to remote communities and homesteads in Western NSW.
New Aboriginal health workers graduate (12 Sep 08)
Fourteen Aboriginal students in a brand new course are among the first TAFE students across NSW to graduate with this qualification.
