Trainees and apprentices
A TAFE traineeship or apprenticeship can produce a more productive worker who is familiar with your business and trained for your industry.
Apprenticeships and traineeships are available to all age groups, and can be undertaken on a part-time basis or full-time in a range of qualifications. Apprenticeships and traineeships can also be undertaken by students based in secondary school as part of the HSC.
Employers are entitled to financial incentives when taking on new apprentices and trainees. These incentives also apply to employers who train or re-train their existing workers.
What is an apprenticeship
Apprenticeships usually last three or four years and cover 'traditional' trades such as carpentry, electrical, hairdressing and plumbing. Apprentices work with their chosen employer to gains on skills and put into practice the theorectical knowledge they gain during their study blocks at TAFE.
Apprenticeships are covered by formal agreements known as either 'Training Agreements' or 'Contracts of Training'. These agreements set out the training and supervision an employer must provide for the trainee as well as the employee’s obligations as an apprentice.
What is a traineeship
Traditionally traineeships last for one to two years, but are 'competency based'. This means it may be possible for a trainee to complete their training sooner if they have reached the skill level required.

The training for traineeships has been designed by industry for industry. The training can be delivered on-the-job, off-the-job, or a combination of both and will be developed in consultation with you, the employer. This approach features more flexible options, backed by extra support services.
